Today, the APPG on Baby Loss and the APPG on Maternity published a joint report on staffing shortages in maternity and neonatal care.
Angela McConville, Chief Executive at NCT said:
"It's crystal clear that maternity services across the country are understaffed, overstretched and letting families down. Staffing shortages contribute to errors, oversights and at their worst, catastrophic consequences.
“We know that systematic staff shortages and underfunding also have a negative impact on many hardworking, compassionate individuals within the NHS who are committed to supporting families. Urgent action is needed to support staff to deliver high-quality, safe and personalised maternity care and the health and wellbeing of staff must also be prioritised.
"We support the recommendations in the report including the call for a multi-year, fully funded settlement for maternity and neonatal services, including ringfencing funding for training and development and the establishment of and adherence to nationally agreed minimum staffing levels for maternity and neonatal staff."
