Today a new report from the Care Quality Commission warned that maternity services at record low level and are experiencing ‘systemic’ failings.
Responding to the Care Quality Commission’s report on the state of health care and adult social care, Angela McConville, Chief Executive at NCT, said:
“The findings in this report are extremely concerning and provide yet another reminder of the current state of NHS maternity services – underfunded, overstretched, and overwhelmed.
“Parents and their babies shouldn’t have to endure anything less than outstanding care, despite the challenges of a failing system.
“At every level, we see recurring patterns of systemic negligence and inequality that can only be broken by acting on past failures and listening to women and parents.
“Anyone accessing NHS maternity services has the right to receive personalised and accessible care. This demands a process of change, which must start from the top with strong management, better staff training and working cultures.
“The next Prime Minister needs to provide leadership and a stable government to ensure these findings are urgently acted upon. We need dedicated funding for each priority area to secure better outcomes for all.”
