Responding to the MBRRACE-UK State of the Nation Perinatal mortality surveillance report, Angela McConville, Chief Executive at NCT, said:

“Our deepest sympathies are with the families affected by the tragedy of baby loss. Neonatal deaths are on the rise, and with a postcode lottery of care and diminishing postnatal services, the new government must act now to avoid any further tragedies.

“Despite several key reports on disparities in maternity care in the last five years, we are still seeing unacceptable disproportionate racial and socio-economic inequality. This often impacts the most vulnerable parents and their babies, but their circumstances should not shape the care they receive. There must be urgent action to ensure equitable care is available and accessible for all mothers and babies, regardless of where they live in the UK.

“We fully support the report’s recommendations for reducing direct and indirect health inequalities. We also cannot ignore the risks of failing to protect neonatal units from closure, which could further emotionally and financially harm families who will be expected to travel further to visit and care for their babies.

“The new government must commit to its manifesto promises on women’s health and to immediately implement a target on reducing health inequalities in care, as well as dedicated investment across the maternity and neonatal care workforce, so that women and their babies receive safe and personalised care.”
