Herts North Nappy Library is a volunteer run, community-based service offering advice and support to anyone interested in using reusable nappies and offering the opportunity to try and test them.
Thinking of switching to cloth nappies but don't know where to start?
Getting started with ‘cloth’ can be overwhelming with so much information, endless options and conflicting advice available. Our library offers parents and carers the opportunity to access information and advice on reusables from volunteers. We are here to help you get started and support your cloth nappy journey.
Why Reusables?
There are so many reasons to try cloth nappies, to name a few:
- Firstly, using reusables is better for the environment. Throwing away every single nappy a baby ever uses creates a staggering 2 tonnes of waste every year, that’s roughly 8 campervans full of waste! Once disposed of nappies are sent to landfill where it takes approximately 500 years to decompose. Reusables also have a smaller environmental footprint when it comes to carbon and water usage.
- Cloth nappies can save your family hundreds of pounds. Especially if you buy pre-loved or use them for more than one child.
- By avoiding plastic and the chemicals found in disposable nappies and wipes and opting for reusable nappies, babies’ health can benefit from more gentle natural fibres on their skin.
- And let’s not forget that with so many colourful designs reusables simply look great!

What do we offer?
Cloth nappies fit differently to disposables and getting the fit right is important to avoid leaks. We have a range of different brands and styles to try.
You can rent one of our kits for six weeks to see how you get on. We will give you an introduction into the different items and be here to help you if you have any questions. We have sets for newborns (up to 3 months) or infants (4 months to 3 years).
Our sets include:
A variety of different types and brands of nappies
Additional parts like boosters and liners
Two waterproof bags
One mesh bag for washing
A stack of reusable wipes
One swim nappy
Optional buckets for storing dirty nappies (on demand)
We also offer a ‘Reusable Wipes’ tester kit, that can be rented alongside or independently from the nappy kit.
Cost:
Nappy pack: £20 fee + £40 (refundable) deposit
Wipe pack: £10 fee + £15 (refundable) deposit

How does it work? Fill in this form to register your interest
You will be asked to pay the deposit and fee before we arrange a meeting to hand over the pack and talk you through everything you need to know. You can then use the kit for six weeks, with the knowledge that we can help you if you have a question. After you’ve returned the kit to us, we will return your deposit.
We also run a Nappy Library Social every last Friday of each month at Cafe at the British Schools Museum in Hitchin.
