In response to the MBRRACE-UK "Saving Lives, Improving Mothers' Care" report, Elizabeth Duff, Senior Policy Adviser at NCT said:

“While it is welcome news that the UK has seen a fall in maternal deaths, it is worrying that many of the women who died had pre-existing mental health problems. Early identification of mental health issues is vital to ensure women receive the support they need.

“It can be very difficult for women to talk about depression so it is unacceptable when the onus is placed on them to do so. We need to ensure that GPs, midwives and health visitors ask the recommended questions and act when necessary.”
