NCT Baby & Child First Aid courses are delivered by quality assured Mini First Aid trainers. Taking Baby & Child First Aid training can help build your confidence as a parent, whether your child is under one year old or an older child.

“The baby first aid class was amazing! So informative, and I feel so much more confident now should I find myself in a situation with my baby where first aid is required. I would like to add that the class was made even better as babies were welcome - hugely appreciated.”

New Parent, Natalie (Shropshire)

Benefits of Walk and Talks

We launched our Walk and Talk groups during the pandemic in September 2020. The groups were built on the concept established by NCT volunteers of hosting local walking groups.

Led by NCT volunteers, our Walk and Talk groups give parents the opportunity to:

  • get outdoors with their babies on a safe and accessible route
  • improve their mental health and wellbeing
  • make new friends and feel part of a community
NCT Walk & Talk

NCT Walk and Talk has given me a reason to get up and ready on those difficult days. Even if we don't always make it on time, at least we're up and dressed. It’s had such a huge impact on my wellbeing as a new mum during lockdown.

Vicki

Without NCT Walk and Talk, I'd feel lost and isolated. It's a chance to discuss things with other parents. I'm a first time mum with no other mums in my friendship groups or family. The walks have made a massive difference to me.

Volunteer as a NCT Walk and Talk leader

We're looking for volunteers to help organise local Walk and Talk events and offer a vital support network to parents.

How you can help

New parents can often feel very isolated, especially if they have moved to a new area, are a long way from family or don't know anyone else with children. You can help.

As an NCT Walk and talk volunteer you can offer a vital support network to parents in your local area. In our survey 95% of parents who attended a Walk and Talk group felt less isolated and that their mood improved. 74% felt less anxious and 91% felt part of a community.

What's involved

Planning your walk

Choose a route. It could be a walk you know, a walk around a park or perhaps a local footpath.

Check the route

Read our risk assessment and complete a checklist to unlock your walk.

Advertising your walk

We will help you set up a booking link so you know how many people to expect. We'll also help you advertise your walk to new and expectant parents in your area. Please note all walks must be open to the public.

At the start of the walk

Arrive early to welcome everyone and introduce yourself and NCT.

On the walk

Chat to parents and encourage conversation. Enjoy the walk!

At the end of the walk

Thank everyone for coming and let them know how to sign up to other local events.

Being a parent is one of the most important jobs on earth, but we all know it can be challenging at times.

With the help of our incredible volunteers, our local NCT communities help you to combat loneliness, make new friends, share stories and information, and most importantly, have fun with your baby.

Our parent and baby meet-ups and groups

Bumps & Babies Play

NCT Bumps & Babies play groups are a fun way to meet other local parents. Some of our groups also welcome toddlers and older children.

Walk & Talk

Walking is great for our wellbeing and health. NCT Walk & Talk groups meet outside and allow you to enjoy some fresh air while meeting other local parents in your area.

Bumps & Babies Chat

Bumps & Babies Chat groups offer a chance to meet other local parents in a public space like a cafe.

Once Mark went back to work, I felt incredibly lonely. I had a crying baby and was very, very tired. I almost lost sight of who I was. My confidence was low. A friend told me about NCT’s Bumps & Babies. It took a bit of courage, and a lot of make-up, but I found myself walking into a café of parents with babes in arms like me. The volunteer was super welcoming and kind. Before too long I was hearing stories that sounded so familiar it made me laugh. I realised, I was not alone.

Amy, Nuneaton

As a new dad on Shared Parental Leave I just felt like I really needed to get out of the house. Being able to drop in to Bumps & Babies was a lifeline as it gave me some time and space to meet other parents and a bit of structure to our day.

Matt, Hitchin

"I love being part of our local NCT community. When we first moved here, I knew no-one. It was the local NCT community who welcomed me. I decided it was time to give back and it continues to pay off for me. I met brilliant parents, made life-long friends and had loads of laughs and cake along the way”
